It was only a little more than a year ago that President Joe Biden — desperately seeking to divert attention from rampant inflation — was bragging incessantly about his administration’s deficit-cutting skills.“My first budget that passed and became law, it cut the federal deficit by $350 billion,” Biden said in April 2022. “We cut the deficit $350 billion. San Diego police investigating after man found shot in back

SAN DIEGO -- San Diego police are investigating after a man was found in City Heights on Sunday with an apparent gunshot wound to his back, the department said.SDPD was dispatched to the scene at the intersection of Altadena Avenue and Wightman Street after a call came in at 7:25 p.m. Officers arrived to find one individual with a wound to his back.The man was pronounced dead on scene. Homicide Unit detectives were called to investigate.Circumstances surrounding the incident remain under investigation by SDPD. SAN DIEGO -- Despite the ups and downs the Padres have had this season, faith in the Friars has never been stronger as fans hit a new Petco Park landmark this weekend.On Sunday, fans packed the stands at the downtown stadium for the Padres' final game in a three game series against the Texas Rangers. With the 42,943 people in attendance, the team hit their 45th sellout this season at the game -- a new franchise record.The previous record was last year's 26 sellouts in the downtown stadium. Padres fans surpassed it last month with two full-house games against the Tampa Bay Rays.Two out of the three games during the series against the Rangers tacked on another sellout to this year's Petco Park record. 47-year-old man in Sheriff's custody dies after found unresponsive in cell

SAN DIEGO -- A 47-year-old inmate at a county detention facility died on Saturday, about 10 days after he was found unresponsive in his cell, according to the San Diego County Sheriff's Office.Jonathan McDowell, a Ramona resident, passed away at Scripps Mercy Hospital around 5 p.m., SDSO said in a news release. He had been transported to the hospital on July 19 after deputies found him unresponsive in his cell at the Vista Detention Facility. Authorities said jail medical staff provided attempted life-saving measures, including CPR, use of Naloxone and an AED device. McDowell's passing marks the 11th in-custody death reported by the law enforcement agency this year.
