Japanese company: ‘High probability’ lander crashed on moon

By MARCIA DUNN (AP Aerospace Writer)A Japanese company’s spacecraft apparently crashed while attempting to land on the moon Wednesday, losing contact moments before touchdown and sending flight controllers scrambling to figure out what happened.More than six hours after communication ceased, the Tokyo company ispace finally confirmed what everyone had suspected, saying there was “a high probability” that the lander had slammed into the moon.It was a disappointing setback for ispace, which after a 4 1/2-month mission had been on the verge of doing what only three countries have done: successfully land a spacecraft on the moon.Takeshi Hakamada, founder and CEO of ispace, held out hope even after contact was lost as the lander descended the final 33 feet (10 meters). Canadian family describes escape from Sudan

A Canadian family, on what was supposed to be a vacation to visit family in Sudan was forced to escape to Germany after Sudan descends into civil war. But most disheartening for Nagwa El Mamoun and her daughter Dalia Abbadi, the inability of the Canadian government to get Canadian citizens to safety.“It was kind of shocking seeing, not just the presence of the RSF and the SAF, but just people’s bodies who unfortunately died in the battle or war, and it’s really really heartbreaking. Quad leaders to hold security summit in Sydney on May 24

CANBERRA, Australia (AP) — Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said Wednesday he will host President Joe Biden and the leaders of India and Japan for a security summit next month.The meeting in Sydney on May 24 will be Australia’s first time hosting the Quad Leaders’ Summit. Authorities find 8 bodies in Mexican resort of Cancun

MEXICO CITY (AP) — Authorities in the Mexican resort of Cancun said Tuesday they are trying to identify eight bodies found dumped in the Caribbean resort. Speaking to families of missing people, Oscar Montes de Oca, the head prosecutor of the Caribbean coast state of Quintana Roo pledged to carry out more searches and identifications. The bodies were found in searches over the weekend in which police looked in wooded lots and even sinkhole ponds known as cenotes. More than 112,000 people are listed as missing in Mexico, and searches for clandestine grave sites have become common throughout the country. What is unusual is that they are now being carried out in Cancun, the crown jewel of Mexico’s tourism industry. The clandestine body dumping grounds are often used by drug cartels to dispose of bodies of their victims.
